i managed to get to senior patrol leader for the 58th bristol (1st eastville) scout group, there where only 2 of us for a while though! lol did beavers, missed cubs, then did scouts and army cadets at the same time. was great fun!

i remember one year at JOTA we managed to network a load of pcs just for fun and play games on them (back in the 90s) and messing about with CB and HAM radios, then making a massive bonfire with palletts, branches and petrol. was good times!

Me and a few mates joined the Boys Brigade cos we thought it would be a laugh and there was a free uniform. Cue the induction:

Leader: Right what happens is this. When you've been to church for 6 Sundays running you get your free uniform.
Me: Mr Leader, I've been to church every Sunday since I was 6 months old without fail. My mum and dad make me go.
Leader: We've never seen you. Which church service do you attend?
Me: St Georges.
Leader: <choke> <splutter>You're, you're, you're a Catholic!!!! Be gone from this place and never darken our doors again.

And so ended my first experience of sectarianism.

I gained a lot from being a scout as a boy (proud to be PL Foxes), so a few years ago answered an ad in the local paper looking for helpers, thinking I'd like to put something back in. I'm not religious but know the rules & happy enough to fit in. What I didn't know was the troop in question was attached to a church, and took the religion bit somewhat more seriously than my old troop. Two chaps turned up unannounced at the door to interview me. They had neat identical hair and wore identical smart blue blazers and grey flannels -not very scouty looking, so at first I mistook them for mormons and made the usual unwelcoming noises, which was the first mistake. Second mistake was that I happened to be expecting a lady friend just about that time, so had been rushing about cooking, hiding smelly clothes & searching for clean-ish ones etc as you do.
Assuming my guest was a bit early I'd appeared at the door in a state of semi undress with a probably slightly lecherous grin and large wecoming G&T in hand.
The nice chaps chatted on the doorstep a bit about scouting in general then left. They never got back to me.

I was in 1st Wilmslow cubs. Left when I moved to Australia and never got in the scout thing. My son is now in beavers and just about to go up to cubs.

I grew up in the Boys' Brigade & really enjoyed it.

My sons are in cubs and scouts and I started as an assistant cub scout leader in September. I wish I could get the cubs to do drill !

Surely you would have been a Scout, rather than a Boy Scout. I thought the Advanced Party report in 1966 was when it all changed.
