I'm going to be playing later today with my wife, and likely losing. She's very good. I'm... no real competition. But I'm happy to be of service in brightening her day as she crushes me.

Any Scrabble lovers? What's your highest score? Any particularly memorable winning words?

I like scrabble. Mini D, age 13, wants to be an English teacher and thrashes me severely most of the time.

At Uni 50 years ago, two mates were studying French. I was studying Physics.

We once played Scrabble in French using an English set. I won! They kept tying for long clever words. I played 3 or 4 letter words on premium squares.

I used to play regularly against my MIL (long since no longer for this world) and used to always beat her. Finally the day came when she was going to actual win, but she needed to go spend a penny, so she told her other half the word he needed to play after I had my go.

Knowing he would do exactly as she told him, I took my go to set myself up for a triple word finish on my next (and what would be final go.) He did what he was told, I finished on the triple word and won. She gave him a right bollocking

We played for quite a few years and the lovely old dear never did beat me.

For the record and to my great surprise, I won. It was a low scoring game (260 to 292), which tends to be the only type where I have a chance. My first draw from the bag yielded AAAACVU. She got a Q which stayed with her to the bitter end.
