And what's more, gannets aren't really gulls at all, they're more closely related to pelicans. Likewise other sea birds: terns, shearwaters, etc.; superficially like gulls but unrelated. However most of these others won't fly inland.No need. There is no such thing as a seagull. There are many varieties of gull, including Herring, Lesser and Greater Black Backed, and Black Headed, but no Sea Gull.
Plenty of gulls round my way, mostly Black Headed, which are common across the whole country.
I think herring gulls are the most prolific 'invaders', nationwide. They love landfill. When the RSPB do their annual big Garden Watch, I reckon they just strike any gull reports off the list ...
