Not quite the answer you were looking for, but it may well work out cheaper for you to knock out the old windows completely and pop in some nice new uPVC units. If you do it yourself you can get new windows for approx £50 per m2 on the internet. Putting in new uPVC windows is easy (I did my whole house myself, including the doors) and it may look nicer too!

EDIT: I say it may be cheaper, because good polycarb can be as expensive as a sealed double-glazed unit!

The website I used was: http://www.windowsanddoors.co.uk/estimate/

I know what you mean regarding secondary glazing, my concern was that it is potentially much more time-consuming and expensive to achieve a good finish with secondary glazing than it is with replacement uPVC units. The latter are also much easier to keep clean!

my caveat is that the website I posted doesn't sell box-section pillars for things like bay windows. (I bought my own pillars separately and made up a jig for my bay).

My mum took out her secondary glazing when she had new frames fitted and gave all the secondary windows to her neighbour who has an identical house.

So how about asking around if you have similar houses around you- or offer them a bit of dosh.

If you plan to sell your house sometime soon then new windows is the only way to go.
