Got the wife back into cycling this year age 52 ,every hill she came to she had to stop and walk, now she climbs every hill with ease.I taught her to get up on the pedals and off the seat and turn the pedals very slowly instead of trying to get to the top of the hill quickly. This allowed her to gain her breath between pedal strokes. If you rush at the hill if it is steep then you push yourself to the point where you need to stop.Try it the next time you are out, get up on the pedals, turn the pedals just slightly faster than walking and you will be surprised at how much energy you have to reach the top of the hill.Once you have mastered this then you slightly increase the speed.Hope this has helped
