Hello I've just come across this number/lettering on my very old bike, I googled it with no joy, could anyone enlighten me on what it is please ?

A bit of a tease going on there I suspect. That does indeed seem to be your frame serial number. For most makes of bike, googling it won't usually find any useful information.

Looks like a standard Raleigh number for Nottingham 1977? Is it under the saddle on the seat tube

It's the frame number from whatever manufacturers it came from.
