Absurdly, this may be the safer route for a few days

Increased public awareness, increased Police presence, locals with their eyes out for the perpetrators....

However... what is really needed is to catch them

I remember walking home one night years ago and was catching a woman up fairly quickly, as I got closer she kept looking over her shoulder at me obviously very uncomfortable. Before I got to her I made sure I'd crossed over the road even though I didn't need to just so it was obvious what my intentions were, it's vermin like those two that cause those kind of fears.
