I know as years go by what was a good choice at the time doesn't always turn out to be best in the long term...but here's a question ?
At a time (10 to 15 years ago) when everyone was saying 'opt out of SERPS, put the money in your private/company pension, its a better deal.
I never was convinced, i always saw the state pension plus top up as a safer option.
The years went by and some years ago, they were saying..actually, you were better off staying in SERPS, because pensions were doing so badly.
By staying in SERPS, my last forcast stated that i effectively doubled my state pension. Result.
At the same time, my company pension, although growing in units is actually worth less each year (for the last 2 or 3 years anyway)
So staying in SERPS most definately was the right thing to do.
Now then...i was just skimming through Facebook, and there's an advert on there...
'Did you stay in SERPS ?..if so we can help you recover the thousands you may have lost !!!'
Unless somethings drastically changed again, it seemes to me thats blatant making you think there's a problem that doesnt exist or deliberately misleading people.
Am i missing something ? Any pension officionados out there ?
