Servicing bottom bracket

Last night when i was out, there was an ominous creaky/grindy noise coming from the area around the crank/bottom bracket. Not had chance to fully investigate yet, but the noise was in time with my pedalling motion.

I should really give that area a service anyway as i've been through a bit of mud and wet recently so it's likely that theres some crud in those areas.

The bike is a GT Transeo 3.0 which has a Shimano ES25 Octalink Bottom Bracket and Shimano M311 Octalink 48/38/28 crank. What im wondering is what tools i need to service this. Im assuming id need one of these

one of these

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-bottom-bracket-removal-tool/

and its probably worth getting one of these

Also, which is the best grease etc that i would need to get this running smoothly?

Cheers

Since the BB has sealed bearings then you will only need grease for the threads to stop them seizing up, copper grease is the best for that job.
You do not need a pedal wrench to replace a bottom bracket but it's worth having anyway, so that you can put some copper grease on the threads.

It's not a serviceable part, so will need a new one. How many miles did you get out of it, the Octalink in my Trek lasted only 700 miles...

I bought the bike second hand, ive done only 400 miles on it, previous owner did the same approximately. If it need replacing, i guess i wouldnt want to replace it like for like if it's not going to last that long, so any recommendations?
