Hoping someone can give me info on how to service this hub? Bought it 2nd hand and it's developing a bit of play after circa 800 miles. Looking either for a manual or just some instructions, as it has a thing an allen key would fit into - what the hell is that for?
Many thanks!

Well it's taken my a while to get round to it, but here's a pic. I'd be grateful for any info!

That red thing is the locking collar. Loosen the allen key and push the axle out. It may be a bit tight because it is a press fit in the bearings. Hit it with a nylon mallet whilst holding it in your other hand. I.e. hold the wheel in your left hand by gripping over the hub and through the spokes and now hit the axle. Do NOT use a steel hammer.

hi,
I also happen to have both rear and front RC2 hubs installed; fortunately, maintenance of this hub is not difficult:

* to dismantle the hub, first remove the wheel from the bike, then completely remove the QR axle (pay attention not to loose the springs, though);
* use 2x 5mm allen keys on each end of the hub axle and turn to opposite directions to loosen the axle (there is an engraved indication saying '>>> LOCK' at each end, to unlock turn to the opposite direction of that shown);
* you then take apart the loosen left (not driveside) part and the right part which contains much of the internal axle - there might be a cylindrical spacer installed on the axle near the cassette to correctly position the cassette after re-installation of the axle+cassette, pay attention how is this installed to refit it after axle maintenance;
* there is no need to dismantle the cassette, since the axle will slide throughout it easily - if not, the cause might be axle bending or other obstruction between the axle and the cassette and/or hub housing;
* that's it! you then can clean and re-grease the axle if you want, as well as the bearings on both sides, the internal side of the hub, etc.
* to re-fit the axle, invert the above procedure; take care that everything is put back in the correct order and that the axle parts are sufficiently secured with the allen keys
* the red head on the left side is to prevent play of the hub: you don't really need to unclamp it, unless you have observed a certain play;
- if so, use a 2mm allen wrench to loosen the head (1-2 turns will suffice) and adjust its position relative to the left side of the hub; you might need to use a 17mm wrench at the inside of the head along with the 5mm allen key on the right end of the axle to loosen entirely the head from the axle for cleaning, greasing etc.;
- to fine adjust the red head to minimize play, it is best to do with the wheel clamped on the bike, after having reinstalled the axle and secured the QR: with the 2mm allen bolt loosened move the head so that it softly touches the bearing housing on the left side and make sure that the hub rotates seamlessly; at that point, secure the red head with the allen bolt but do not overdo as you may damage the bolt otherwise
* the procedure is the same for the front hub

Hope this helps!
