I'm planning to get my bike thoroughly serviced before my German tour in May. However riding it over the last few days I think I may have to bring that forward, it definitely doesn't feel as good as it used to. I've done 2,500 miles in 7 months in all weathers and I think probably sooner rather than later would be good. It'll cost me £100-ish but they will dismantle it, clean it all, replace any required parts and then remantle it and it's not something I would want to, or have the knowledge to, do myself. Mind you, they haven't done a trike before, but felt confident they could do it as I also have the build manual for it (although it came ready-assembled from the supplier).

My bikes don't go near anyone other than me....that's it.....

I service the hubs about every 6 months on the commuter as they are simple cup/cone - the road bikes wheels don't get touched......no need...sealed cartridge - if they go rough, then replace.... dead easy......

BB's are fit and forget. Headsets get a squirt of waterproof lube every year...

Drive systems/chain are well looked after...

Bikes kept clean....

Front and Rear mech's get a squirt of lube on pivots. Jockey's get same waterproof lube (yeh I know don't need them but....)...

The commuter gets the most attention, as it's out all weathers..... the road bikes just tend to build up layers of Mr Sheen........good stuff !!

Being fairly new to cycling, can I ask what does a bike serive generally include?

Someone stated they pay £9 including cleaning, surely they do nothing but a visual inspection for that sort of money?

I cannot imagine taking my bike into a shop to be worked on! If I did though, there are only two mechanics I would trust to work on any of my bikes unsupervised.

It was me who paid £9 but I live in Bangkok! What did they do? Complete stripdown, clean & lube all working parts, adjust brakes and gears, cleaned and polished to a showroom finish.

I'm exactly the same. If the bike is brand new I'll get the shop to sort any issues just to keep the guarantee straight but other than that.

I take mine to a LBS before and after winter for a service. They clean and lube all bits. I get them to replace worn brake blocks and cables if necessary. Costs about £40 each time and the bike comes back feeling very differnet each time and much better to ride.

I reckon I could do most of this myself but I just don't have the time and to be honest I can afford the 40 quid so why not? But I would reccomend getting a service at least one year if you don't do owt to your bike yourself.
