The part of the HC you quoted as "evidence" of being right has nothing at all to do with people crossing the middle of the road. Irrespective of what others have said, you are wrong. And the "family" crossing the road are stupid; if they included children then the adults are setting a disgraceful example

They were undoubtedly very stupid. I didn't however, think that was a good enough reason to leave them in dangerously precarious position when I had the opportunity to allow them to cross safely to the other side.

They were really grateful too, and waved happily in gratitude, which was nice. I was feeling quite warm inside until my own family rounded on me.

While the highway code doesn't give pedestrians right of way to cross a road, that doesn't equate to the motorist having the right to mow down pedestrians ! It just means the motorist doesn't have to stop when people are waiting to cross.

The males in your car were all wrong and you, the lone female, were totally right. Just because there are 3 of them and 1 of you does not make them correct.

Anyway, good manners and courteous driving says that if safe to do so you should let the peds across. They might be squished by someone less courteous.

This does usually seem to be the case, strangely!

We aren't in the States.

So if you just squish them then, its ok cos you've got right of way?

I didn't say that. You were wrong, just accept it.

Really hope you're joking. If not, I hope not to have to share a road with you.

Nope, they do not have right of way.

Now, that is not to say I would not stop if I saw someone "stranded" and allow them to pass, but it would be as a courtesy not because they had right of way. The two are not the same thing. I am very courteous as a driver and a cyclist, but also aware of what the rules of the road state and how things can go badly wrong when people don't have a clue.

Hopefully Sara H will let her hubby and sons see this thread so they'll know at least one cyclist knows what he is on about!
