Shameful Victorians

While searching for some local information I found an online archive for sentences handed down to local miscreants in 1839, poor William Parry got 1 month inside for neglecting to milk a cow, what can I say about the 2 Elizas - </snigger>

What is really sad is how many were sentenced to hard labour for stealing small amounts of food, and how young some were, 11 years old sentenced to 1 month hard labour for running away from the workhouse the same sentence handed down to a man who beat up his wife.

Let's take it back a few years, didn't we once sentence a cloud to death by stoning. Several people were killed when all the stones came back down?

My great grandmother was sentenced to 3 (or 6?) months hard labour for stealing a pound of butter. She was pregnant at the time and her baby was born in prison.

Though the guy she was hooked up with at the time was always in trouble judging by the court reports at the time so I suspect she wasn't just stealing because she was desperate for food.

But you'll miss the best bits - despite the number of bicycles that must have been on the road I haven't found a single case of 'wanton and furious riding, however, the Victorian equivalent of the Corsa teenagers were about with several teens prosecuted for thundering along the Cainscross road in a horse and cart without holding onto the reins I bet that law hasn't been repealed !

One poor guy was fined for 'easing himself' in the street 💩 - that would be classed performance art today

Turnips were most at risk of being stolen - perhaps Baldrick was in the area - and the vicar took exception to having some of his pears stolen with a couple of lads feeling the full force of the law for that!
