In a thread a few days ago, Shandy Bass was mentioned (along with it's poorer cousin - Top Deck). Well in Sainsbury on Saturday a 2L bottle caught my eye nestling on the top shelf, surprised to see it still existed I bought some for me and the lad.

After something like a 30+ year abscence in my life here goes ....

Enjoy.

Im just about to open the pear cider

Shandy - truly a drink for cyclists. No really, apparently it was invented by a German bar owner as something light and refreshing for the new craze of cyclists who turned up at his country inn. Hence the German name for it - Radler (Rad being 'wheel' or bicycle)

As a frequent visitor to Germany I can confirm that- the word Radler can also means cyclist in German. If you order a Radler over there you will get a lager-shandy, 50:50. On a hot day it really hits the spot even if you usually hate lager (both Mr Hamster and I are real ale drinkers).

Managed to drag him over there for a cycling long weekend two years ago, we both loved it but he ended up with a very sore backside

Yeah, Top Deck was the trendy young pretender, but Shandy Bass was the original!

Nonsense, it was the real deal! not just lemonade but with a lime option too! It was the cornerstone of the metrosexual generation!

Young pretender indeed!

What you got up to in private is your affair...

I went to the Spezi show last year and it was really hot and on the Sunday we got a spin along the Rhine path to a little cafe where I had Radler and bratwurst and chips - really felt I was entering into the spirit of it! And the Radler was indeed nectar!

This was the hard-kids drink where I grew up.
