I use Lidl 5 blade jobbies. I think they are called Shark 5 or something. I have yet to be persuaded by advertisers that shaving is somehow a celebration of masculinity. It's just a bore.

Are they good? I have dreadful memories of an old lidl system. Sandpaper would have been more effective/comfortable. I have used Aldi systems for a while and find them generally excellent.

Thanks for that info. Do you recommend any particular cream/soap or whatever? Have wondered about using such a system when touring/camping but maybe I have illusions about coming across as one of those macho types from old westerns.

My system is very cheap. A cheap Wilkinson Sword brush from Tescos and I just use cheap soaps generally. Palmolive shave stick is as good as any and very cheap or I like the Wilkinson Sword soap in a blue bowl. Erasmic is nice but no so easy to find. Traditional hard shaving soaps last a very long time too.

I do own one expensive soap, a bowl of Trumpers but I don't see that it's any better than the cheap soaps. It smells nicer perhaps but doesn't offer any performance advantage.

Creams are easier to lather but I personally prefer soaps. Again Palmolive is a good place to start if you want to try a cream.

Trumpers don't do good soaps but DR Harris do. Taylor's Old Bond Street do very good creams and some good soaps.

I agree that Palmolive is a very good soap for the price.

The palmolive stuff in tubes, possibly still metal, is good and handy. I think, in some time warp kind of way you can still get it but I don't know where. I used to use it when inter railng as a youth.

Well, if you want to have a go without investing too much then I suggest you buy a Gillette Classic for about a fiver. It's a plastic razor but it does a decent job and you'll find out if it's something you might get used to.

Blades cost from about 4p to about 15p IIRC I suggest buying a lot of different blades and see what you like best. A blade is good for 3 shaves or so.

Soap can be bought for as little as 50p from supermarkets.... try Palmolive stick at 50p from supermarkets. A brush like Wilkinson for about £3.50 and you are ready to go.

Thanks for this post. I retired last March and while it may sound ridiculous I'm budgeting where I can. I'm sick to death of shelling out a small fortune on cartridges but equally didn't want to spend a lot on a safety razor till I know it will work for me. Last time I used a safety razor would be 50 years ago, it was my father's.

Just switched from Gillette Fusion plus to Wilkinson's Hydro5 I am not going back, best shave I ever had and they seem to last well.
