Ach I've given up. I've got cut throat razors, safety razors, disposable razors, Harry's razors, Cornerstone razors, Hydro5 razors, Lidl Shark razors - all because I get hacked off at the price of Mach3 cartridges. I've spent a frickin fortune trying to save money. Every time, every time I end up back using the Mach3

I went all out and bought a decent starter razor, brush and shaving cream 5 years ago.

https://www.shaving-shack.com/merkur-34c-heavy-duty-classic.html @£29
https://www.shaving-shack.com/the-bluebeards-revenge-double-edge-razor-blades.html @£3.49/10
https://www.shaving-shack.com/pure-badger-shaving-brush-2.html @£20

As you can see the switch from Gillette mach3 was high, but the shave is much better, and also cheaper once the hardware has been purchased. The pot of shaving cream lasts around 6 months, and blades are cheap to replace.
The Merkur razor is working perfectly and the shaving brush has many years service left in it
They usually run promotions or BOGOF on razors, when i stock up for the year.
Could never go back to Gillette and the waste of money on replacement razor bits, shaving gel etc

Thanks for this post. I retired last March and while it may sound ridiculous I'm budgeting where I can. I'm sick to death of shelling out a small fortune on cartridges but equally didn't want to spend a lot on a safety razor till I know it will work for me. Last time I used a safety razor would be 50 years ago, it was my father's.

Once you find what works best for you it's hard to get a better shave.

I also used my dad's razor when I was 17 or so then electric razor, various types of cartridge razors.

There are some expensive safety razors that will last forever but not necessarily give you a better shave.

These days I do half of my shaves with a straight razor and that's a step above yet again, it does take a while to learn the technique and overcome the fear :laugh:

Good luck and enjoy your safety razor

I’ve been using the Wilkinson safety razor for a week now. The results are improving. I’m thinking now about technique.

Using a cartridge razor I used to shave against the direction of growth. I’ve read with a safety razor one should shave in the direction of growth. Correct or not? This does seem to get a better result.

I find I need to go over my beard 3-4 times to get a good result. Is this just a question of experience.

Lastly I’m getting a small amount of bleeding on my neck. Not cuts but almost scrapes. I am on aspirin as a blood thinner so bleed quite easily.
