Anyone got a sheepskin coat? And are they worth the money?
I'm very tempted by this but wondering if its worth giving fleabay a try first.

(Hmmm. Something expensive and ostentatious. Perhaps I should just have sent Greedo a pm. xx()

I just checked other stuff on their site and the male model they use doesn't do them any favours.

Yes. One of those really stiff, heavy Antartex jobs, but much thicker than they sell nowadays.

And are they worth the money?
I inherited mine from my dad, who bought it in the mid 60s i.e before fleece and all the modern fabrics. I never wear it.

If you want it for performance, no, they're hopless. Get a good quality fleece or a woollen coat. If you want it for appearance, I have no idea - what I know about fashion would fit on the edge of a stamp.

I prefer the Irvin flying jacket, but the genuine ones are proper pricey !

If you're feeling particularly chilly you can get matching sheepskin trousers too ;)

I've still got my sheepskin I bought in the 60s! It's a bit tight but I can't BEAR to part with it. It's curly fur!

I've got a short jacket with zip which I bought for £5 from a charity shop because there was a stain on the pocket. It's great.

I think that one is extremely pricey. I'd look on Ebay because you will be able to get one very reasonably for a very nice coat. Because they're not really fashionable at the moment, people just get fed up of them.

Incidentally when you put them down on a chair, cats love to sleep in them.

Ebay it is then as a first port of call. Might wait until the sumer when demand should be lower. ust the thing for the football terraces next year.

Just thought of another reason to get one instead of a man-made fabric coat. Its a sustainable naturally renewable resource ;)

I'd pay not to have to wear anything that looks remotely like these sheepskin coats. If you're in it for the looks, it seems best to avoid these. They are not fashionable, few people wear them, and there is a reason for that.

If you're looking for warmth, you're probably better off:
- adding some layers, including wool: put on an extra cashmere jumper for starters. Lightweight and very warm. Put on some thermal long johns and a thermal long sleeve T-shirt, and possibly liner socks to layer up for your feet as well. The trick is to make sure the heat retention happens all over you - not just your upper body.
- then add a decent 3/4 coat, made of regular wool, or cashmere if you're willing to splash out.
- do what the model on the site omits: wear a scarf made of wool/cashmere, and a hat that covers your ears. Add gloves, including silk liner gloves when it's very cold, and you'll be OK for the big freeze.

Leaving skin uncovered is the quickest way of getting cold. Cover your neck with a scarf, wear a beanie, and you'll stay a lot warmer than by wearing an extra thick sheepskin coat. It's not a matter of getting one item of clothing right - make sure your overall attire works for the weather you venture out into.
