I live in Ellon, Aberdeenshire and plan to take the ferry from Aberdeen to Lerwick and then cycle up to Unst for the longest day (June 21st). I will be camping, with maybe 1 or 2 nights wild camping and use of campsites.

If you are interested in accompanying me I will be glad to hear from you...

Don't know if you've done this before so sorry if this is old news. We did this two years ago - fantastic trip, but 'ware the wind - it took us almost an extra day to cycle back to Lerwick into the south westerlies! Recommend sticking to the west coast road on the way up - it's easier and the views are great. We wouldn't bother with the tent - cut down on weight and if you are looking for cheap places to stay the bods (sort of a cross between a minimalist youth hostel and a bothy) are great - we'd recommend The Windhouse Lodge on Yell - if you can make it on the first day out it is a great base to go up to the north of Unst and back Lerwick youth hostel is great too.

Don't forget to pop into the Valhalla Brewery while you're up there - you'll have to ring a head if you want a tour though and I'm not sure he'll be open all night on the 21st...

...and again apologies if you've done it before, but if you can hit Baltasound, Unst on their monthly "fish & chips" for all evening in the village hall you may not be disappointed, especially if you like a Shetland fiddle band?

What surprised us was how relatively "tame" the otters are. None of this stalking downwind and being silent for hours on end stuff, they just amble past you.

Wonderful.

Thanks for this info. I lived up there for a few years in the mid 70's and again in the late 90's - know what you mean about the wind! I like the 'wild camping' bit but will follow up on these Bods I think... Thanks.
