Anybody know what the roads are like in the Shetlands? I might be going there on July. I was wondering if my hybrid or my road bike would be more suitable?
We found the roads in excellent condition most of the time.
quite hilly indeed (but then again, we're dutch, so a molehill is quite a hill to us).
courteous drivers (just like most of Scotland really).
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves when we were there in 2011.
I worked up there a few years back. Roads are pretty good in the most part. The road from Lerwick up towards Sullom Voe can be busy with construction traffic for all the work taking place at the oil terminal.
Quite hilly in bits and its always windy - and quite often wet. Great scenery though and on a sunny day it can be idyllic
I worked up there too and my recollection is exactly the same.
The roads are fine, and quiet off that main north-south one.
And it does seem to rain on most days, but not usually all day. And usually it usually comes from the side.
But the long summer nights are glorious.
Thanks guys - maybe I will just bring both bikes. As for the rain that doesn't really worry me too much, after all it rains most days here in Ireland too.
