is it those terrible ones up by the stem?
you really want to save up and scrap them and you brake levers and go for Shimano Total Integration (STI) they are the type where you click the whole gear lever sideways inwards to change one way and then the same movement on a little black plastic paddle thingy just behind the brake lever to change the other way

not cheap considering it is only a budget road bike but if it's what you want then they are the answer. after all i did pay £125 more for a cycle computer than i did for my bike!

these are another alternative that would allow you to stick with your current brake levers, bar end shifters. a hell of a lot cheaper as well

of course regardless of what sort you get you would of course have to get the right ones to suit the number of gears you have on the front and the number of gears on the back

Or you can go friction (no clicks) and it'll work as long as it's for at least as many gears as you've got. I'm not a big fan of STI or Rapidfires because I forget what gear I'm in.

I think the most important thing is to buy the right shifters for Shimano (most people), SRAM, Campagnolo or Sturmey-Archer (hub gears - which is what Ed linked to) cable pull. The original makers aren't the only suppliers, especially not for Shimano.

Its great that your on the road and keep it up , you could look to upgrade your shifters to these

But it might be more cost effective overall to sell the bike and add what it would cost for the shifters and buy a good second hand bike with a better spec .
I dont normally say buy second hand but if your going to be out the best part of £200 +for the original bike + new shifters + fitting it might be worth it as for another £100 on top (£300 total ) you could get something like

Of the two the second one has a better specification .

Is just use it as it is for now then sell it and buy a bike with better bits when the time is right. I had a Viking with same shifters last year. Used it until I crashed it and broke myself and the bike to pieces
