Hi,
My rear derailier is buggered! http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/rear-derailer-is-this-fixable.116463/

Does anyone know if there are different version of the 105 Short cage derailer? (I know there is a medium for tripples)

Some adverts and the official docs seem to say 28 tooth is the max, but also a lot of adverts say 30 teeth are the max?

Anyone have real world experience? (Will be used with a 34-50 compact)

This is probably no help, but the latest Tiagra can use a 30 tooth cassette.

I have 105 running a 30T on my XC wheels and have no problem whatsoever

Hi,

Thanks for that.

Can I ask...
Are you are running a 50-34 chainset?
Is it the shortcage version?
Are all gears usable (mainly the big-big combo - I dont use that but I wouldnt want it to explode if I put it in there by mistake!)

Thanks!

Not sure on cage, it's just the standard one that came on the bike.

There's plenty of room on the 30T, I recon it could do more.

Running a 34/46 and everything is usable and didn't even need any adjustment.

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
I'm running that with an 11-28 on the Secteur. That's fine for me on even the steepest hills.

Looks like Im going for a new rear short cage mech, cheapest is from CRC at £35 ish, and also going for a Tiagra 11-30 cassette for hilly rides.

I'm running that with an 11-28 on the Secteur. That's fine for me on even the steepest hills.

Im sure it is, but want to try those hills carrying another 4.5 stone? Chubbies like low gears!

Actually the 105 medium size cage works with double and triple cranksets. With double up to 32 sprockets and up to 30 with triple.

Whether a road mech works with a large sprocket is nothing to do with the cage length - it's about whether the top jockey wheel fouls the large sprocket or not. This depends on the B-screw setting, chain length, and how long the mech hanger on your frame is.
Pushing the quoted limit by 2T (i.e. 28T to 30T for most road mechs) is usually OK, but not always. That someone else can use a certain size of sprocket with a particular mech doesn't necessarily mean that you can.
