Complete numpty question here, I know, but I've never tried this.

Am I correct in saying you don't need a chain whip to install a Shimano cassette? You just need the tool thingy?

Just make sure you buy the correct tool thingy

probably not. but go to youtube, search shimano cassette removal/installation.

in about 3 minutes 50 seconds you will know all there is to know about it.

User. If it is a Shimano Hyperglide cassette you just need to remove the locking nut and the cassette will lift off.

Using a locking nut removal tool and an adjustable spanner.

I always thought the first ones were better quality as they stay in place, I suppose however, the 2nd type may be for when you are fitting a cassette to a bike that doesn't have a hollow axle so is actually more universal :?:

You DO NOT need a chain whip to remove a Hyperglide cassette. Use the tool and a spanner to remove the locking ring and lift the cassette of the hub.

The cassette will only turn in one direction.
