The left gear shifter (fitted to my ancient mountain bike only last winter), is a Shimano shifter operated by a single lever.
This lever seems to slot into 'notches' (marked by little indicators on the dial), but it is never clear when it will actually do its task of shifting the chain onto one of the 3 chainrings.
There are no markings of 1,2,or 3 on the dial; just the indicators, of increasing size going from left to right, which all click as the lever is passed through them. After several clicks in any 'zone', the chain will shift onto the correct ring, but it is not reliable on sudden hills.
Nor am I sure what the purpose of all these notches actually is - surely only 3 options are needed? This wide spread of notches through just 3 chainrings must mean something or have some purpose!
Any advice will be much appreciated.
