I have a Ridgeback Ultraflight fitted with Shimano R500 wheels. I have been using the bike everyday as a commuter and the wheels are taking a pummelling. I have had multiple punctures and a buckled wheel.
I am looking to replace these wheels with something sturdier and longer lasting. Can anyone recommend a wheel set which could replace these Shimano's and would be more robust for my daily commute?

I should add that I would be looking at a max budget of around £200.

For commuting a sensible set of handbuilts would be a wise choice (so you can just replace the rims when they wear out). Some reliable 32 hole Shimano 105 hubs built up with Rigida Chrina rims would come well within budget and would make a solid commuting wheel. The rims may be cheap, but they're very decent.
