Hi there,

Sorry if this subject has been broached before...

After many many years of mountain biking I have decided to go ahead and buy a road bike (Ribble 7005SL (Sloping TT) Road Frame + Shimano 105), I am currently using SPD's on the mountain bike and have done for years, so getting to the point...

Will my road bike be ok equiped say with some Shimano M540's as opposed to going for a new set of SPD-RL's and compatible shoes at even more expense?

Anyone thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated

Many thanks,

I use SPD's on my road bike - much easier to walk in between the office and the building with the showers in.

As an SPD user, I too have deviated from purist route of the single sided road pedal you always have to flip and shoes you can't walk in. Provided you have a good stiff (ideally carbon) soled MTB shoe, pedals like the M540 or M770 are fine.

I actually use Powerplay Force which are cheaper and lighter than the M770, and there is also a Powerplay Force Pro. They are great quality pedals and I have never had any hotspot problems even on 100 mile+ rides

You might want to have a look at the A520s. SPD, so maintains compatibility with all your shoes, but single sided so a bit lighter and more intended for road use.

I like MTB style pedals when commuting on a road bike, easier to get away at junctions: foot doesn't go in, you can still accelerate.

I'm even thinking of slapping some on my TT bike (since I ride that to work too on occasions)

It also means you won't need more shoes.

Many thanks for the helpful replies, looks like I might stick with the SPD route then

Cheers again

good decision Sys
there will always be some club roadie who will raise an eyebrow and say mmm arn't those MTB spd's but the majority will probably secretly envy you .
I have never owned or ridden an MTB bike but I have used spd pedals for many years on all my road bikes because I love the MTB shoes ,so comfortable to walk in.

Currently road racing on SPD's. Much prefer them for walking in, cos I use the same bike to commute.

Shoes that I have are a bit toss tho, soles a bit bendy, and not flash enough in green/brown!

Currently eyeing up some Northwave Aerator MTB shoes with carbon sole at £150 in white and red - might buy them first then tell the missus after when its too late.

funny thing is if we said to her indoors
'thats a new pair of shoes isn't it ' we would get the stock answer back
'no I've had these years '
Why is it they can get away with it and we can't eh ?

SL all the way for me, i use them for my longer rides, and for my commute and wouldn't go to standard SPD's for anything.

The larger pedal base, stiffer shoes and better clip means my acceleration and pull up is a lot better than what i would achieve with a standard SPD. And this means i can get away from the lights faster than others with just a single foot in and the other hanging.

I used to have SPDs on my road bikes, still do on my tourer, but changed to roadie cleats around a few years back.

Reminds me though; when I first got it, I took my racer into that set-up place in Covent Garden (the name evades me for the moment) and the bloke's first remark was 'why have you got mountain bike pedals?'! My first brush with roadie ways!
