Why do cycling shoes have 4 bolt holes when Shimano SPD cleats only use 2 bolts?
Are these for more fore/aft adjustment? Everyone I know only use the two holes nearest the toe of the shoe.

Yep. The plate should slide so allows you to position the cleats where you like on your foot. Just checked mine and I use the rearmost ones.

I think its for other kinds of cleats with different fittings :smile:

Edit: oops too slow, but i saw some that had holes for 3 different kinds of cleats iirc :smile:

It gives additional scope to move them a bit further forwards or backwards. FWIW, I use the rear ones too, not the holes closest to the toe.
