Shoes for use with toe clips

I use toe clips instead of cleats and currently use quite stiff trainers are the shoes designed for cleats any good with toe clips?

It depends on the type of shoe.

MTB (SPD type cleats) shoes may be OK, but my road shoes (SPD-SL type cleats) are very hard and smooth on the soles and would slide around quite a bit on normal pedals I think.
