Hi all I’m new to fiorums but not to biking . I’m looking to buy some clip less shoes that I don’t look like a total goon in. I spend a lot of time off the bike as I use it like most would a car like for work shopping and pottering about. I can’t ride like I used to as I now have what’s called bakers knee or bakers cyst. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for buying a pair of clipless commuting shoes that don’t scream biker when walking round Aldi. I have looked around but the only ones I see cost an absolute fortune. I’m only looking to spend up to £40 and don’t really mind if there pre owned as long as they not been worn much. Any idea where I could find the bargains that I crave for.. I can’t work a lot any more so pennies are a bit tight. And I thinking of some new flat clipless peddles too. Any help where to look would be much appreciated.

Have you had the cause of the Bakers cyst investigated (usually down to a cartilage or ligament issue or arthritis), ask to see a knee specialist if you haven't

Planet X often have deals on clipless shoes, the Carnac brand (problem is they don't do free returns if the shoes are no good, Wiggle and Chain Reaction do). Look at Evans clearance/ex display deals too

https://www.planetx.co.uk/c/q/clothing/footwear/mountain-bike-footwear#!=&g_manufacturer=carnac

They look like bike shoes, but not sure why that's an issue if pottering around off the bike? For work, just change the shoes if needed

And you'll want to look for pedals ;)

I'm struggling to understand why you feel the need for cycle specific shoes for the usage you describe, particularly when you say money is a little tighter than it once was.
Have you tried cycling in normal shoes? Lots of people have been cycling for years in ordinary footwear without any problems, myself included.

Damaged my knee when I jumped off a dumper truck 20 years ago. Always gave me a bit of shoot in the winter months but only developed the cyst last year. I have had it looked at awaiting xrays now. I have been on planet ex and I got to say it’s the best online shop I seen as yet but only got one pair on there in my size which I do like but thought I’d look about first. Decathlon I forgotten all about them they have a branch near me me worth looking at. Thanks

I’ve ridden most of my life with out clips and used to use cages a lot. I guess I just fancy a change if it makes your peddling more efficient then It might just make it easier on me old knee.

+ 1 for Decathlon. I've bought a bit of their cycling clothing but not shoes. I also like my cycling shoes to be fit for walking and not to look like a racing shoe and if I needed something at a good price that's where I would look first. Most times I go "up to the Ricoh", I take a look around the Decathlon shop ^_^.

Good morning,

You mention that you have knee issues, I broke an ankle quite badly years ago and since then my foot doesn't point straight ahead.

In the old days of shoe plates nailed into shoes without any pre made mounting points I had no problems I set the shoe plates at an angle.

Fairly recently I tried clipless and all the shoes on offer (and I think all shoes) had mounting points fixed into the shoe and the cleats could only be mount straight in relation to these point so I couldn't get the cleats at the right angle for me. So much so that I didn't even try to ride as I could feel the twist in my knee just sitting on the bike.

Currently I ride with Aldi cycling shoes which were made for SPD but I have no cleats, so I end up with a shoe with a hard sole, easy to walk in and look quite normal.

Bye

Ian
