In a similar vein, I complimented a bloke behind the bar recently for topping up my pint after the head had settled. We had a little discussion about it...I said was it just me but am I getting served with oversize heads more often lately. He said no, it's not just me - staff are told, informally, to serve short measure, topping up without protest if there's a protest. "I don't do it. I serve a pint like I'd like to get one. But it's easy for me - I've been here ages and they can hardly sack me. But the younger ones feel under pressure..."
And while I'm on the subject, where outside the 1st world are people happy to pay full price and get less than they paid for? Or pay more than full price for what they receive?
Three stories, kinda related:
1) At a local Wetherspoons, I accidentally knocked a 'just served' pint, spilling the top 1/3 of it. I asked barman to top it up (it had been served about 5 seconds previously) and was told it was company policy not to do so.
2) I used to live in Spain, a long time ago, but for nearly three years. On many occasions, I've seen drinks spilled by customers in bars, and the whole drink invariably gets replaced without question, even without the customer asking.
3) However, they don't know how to pour a beer in yer Spain. We coached our local barman in not pulling beer with half the glass being froth. We called it 'low tide' (marea baja) and he passed his skills on to his fellow barmen. Who applied them only to us Brits, no doubt.
