It's not all about going as hard as you can for as long as you can, or doing a longer run in the shortest time. A lot of people like to get out to enjoy the countryside or the weather while maintaining a level of fitness without being competitive. A 4-hour 50-miler, including a coffee stop, is a great way of spending the day while leaving plenty in the tank for the next day.

If you want to compete, even if only with yourself, that's fine, but chasing your tail every time you're out leads to tiredness and loss of motivation. Even serious racers have to have easy days as part of their training programme.

Depends what you’re trying to achieve surely, if you want to smash out +20mph 100 mile rides okay but what does that mean and are you enjoying those rides because you must be maxing out and not seeing all the amazing stuff I’m finding out now when I just ride.

I should caveat I’m almost 50 and a lot of stuff that was important is not longer even on the radar
