Short Commute

Only a 5 mile round trip commute for me so i usually add to it.

On Way back in the Winter and on Way in during better weather, and occasionaly via a Burger Van or Pub on the route......but always the route home ;-)

My commute is only 1.85 miles , And i was just thinking , Does anyone deliberately extend their commute to get extra miles under their belt ??

Yes.

Return leg, 10miles extended to 20. This summer I will be looking at doing 30 every so often too.

Work leg is 15.5km shortest but I regularly do a 17km route, with various choices in between.

(I go different ways to and from work, hence differences).

If I was only doing 1.85miles though, I would probably be cycling in work clothes (with waterproofs) so wouldn't be conducive to cycling distance in... but for that length I would probably take the scenic route every so often still.

Yep, my commute is 1 mile. I've got a choice of extended routes from 6 miles to 12, or more I guess. Throw in a lunchtime ride and another extended ride home and it's easy to clock up 30 or more miles without being a 'real commuter'.

I used to have a summer commute route which extended my normal 9 miles to 18 each way.

Now my commute is very short - in winter, 2.5 miles to the ferry and about 1.5 from the other side to where I work. There's little opportunity for extending it in winter though with much of the island having unploughed gravel roads and conditions generally hostile to cycling. From spring the ferry comes to the dock that's only yards from my house, so then often it does get extended with a ride to the US ferry terminal on the other side of the island, and back (making about 10 miles for the journey in). To be honest though, it's rather flat and boring, so I tend to run in the morning instead these days.

Depending on route my rural commute can be 10 - 12.5 - 15 or 19 miles; being able to mix up routes which keeps things interesting. Throw in some steady climbs, a couple of steep bits, Scottish coastal weather patterns and plentry of tractors, no two days are the same.

Yep - though not as frequently at this time of year

3 miles each way so I often take a detour either a fast 10-miler taking in Meadowhell or a slower 19-miler taking in the edges of the Peak District and Redmires reservoir with a few climbs (occasionally on nice mornings/evenings in summer upping it to 26 to take in Ladybower reservoir instead)

My direct commute is 2 miles, including a significant (for this area) hill. I extend it to 4 miles by setting off in the opposite direction to work and riding our local cycle super highway. The CSH is a converted railway branch line; soon it will be extended by a new foot/cycle bridge as well to eliminate yet more traffic from the route

Commute is 1.6 miles each way. I work splits so that's 6.4 miles a day. On the home trip in the afternoon I add on 5-20 miles depending upon the weather etc.
