The thing is we're in the top 7% of the UK for household income, we're childless by choice & we own our house outright, okay quite a modest house compared to others with our income but that's how we want it... It kind of makes the rest of what you said irrelevant.

Everyone's income is finite.

Besides which, you asked a question about my behaviour, which I thought about and tried to answer. You may not feel that the details of my answer apply to a powerfully built company director such as yourself, but it's still represents my thoughts on the reasoning behind my post, which is what you asked.

What is the physiological need for people to try & convince me I shouldn't buy something I want & can afford?... I'm buying a petrol 4 door GT or estate/tourer. There is no debate about that, nothing else will fit the bill, the question is which one.
So what function do you require of this tool? That's the bit I'm missing

It's just when someone basically says, they're buying a £50-£65k car, talk of 'value' seems to be a little irrelevant.

Yes, income is finite I'd like to go for a Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. 0 VED emissions band with a big power petrol engine. It's exactly what I'm after... however the >110k price tag & insurance are just too much.

You've very much got the wrong idea of me. You've got two people who are earning a little above the mean salary for their profession in the area.

Thats pretty good fuel consumption from the big BM. I see mid 20s and upto 40 on a long run.
On what?

Sorry thread dropped, just a normal 1.8 family saloon....

I suppose it depends on miles. A 1.6 petrol Astra was crippling my mate until he got the diesel Insignia SRI company car, he had been given the petrol until his car turned up, and he does some miles so it was a huge difference.

Fuel costs aren't a big consideration to me now, the car just gets to transport the bikes to the caravan at weekends, but as there are 4 they go on the roof of a family saloon. Hammers 8 mpg off the fuel average if I take it easy.

But as you have said, diesels aren't good on sort local journeys, the particulate filter clogs up. Even my petrol doesn't like being sat all week, then local weekend journeys over winter, takes a few runs plus fuel system cleaner to keep it happy. It was used to doing 15k, but the last 6 years does 3k during summer and about 1k in winter.

I think the rate you are getting is really good, so it's like £750 for 6 weeks, so not much over £100 smackers a week.

It's loads of car for the rate. Leasing or buying... Have fun. It's on a par with business rates which I am used to dealing with, so that's damn good private.

When you combine an 7 or 8sp auto with a big >4 pot engine you can run the engines at ludicrously low rpm & keep it there because of the gear count. Because of the auto box you don't need the epic torque levels I had with the Alfa as it'll almost instantly drop 3 or 4 gears. Added to this modern high compression turbo engines are really good. A friend of mine has an 220PS Octavia vRS hatchback (2.0 turbo), around town is getting low 30s, on longer journeys he's touching 50mpg. Very similar story with a BMW 328i with an 8sp auto, high 20s/low 30s around town & into the low 50s for long trips. Vauxhall & Ford have been behind the curve on petrol development from what I've seen & they're also not so good on the fuel economy in general.

The lowest fuel impact way I've found to transport bikes which aren't in the car is a trailer.

Even without the particulate filter you absolutely hammer a diesel engine & if it's not warm then they use as much, if not more, fuel than a petrol engine. The Alfa was quite happy sitting on the drive for weeks at a time then going on a 200 mile trip. But when my OH started using it as her daily it's slowly been getting worse & worse requiring more & more maintenance to keep it running properly.

@GrasB I am interested in what you see is the function of the car you choose. What you things you want it to do etc

Wife's daily driver, the bit that's kind of concerning us, and long distance cruiser for 4 people with luggage. Why a luxury GT & not an MPV? The best MPVs out there aren't good enough to let a person sleep properly for 1 1/2 to 2 hours thus not allow us to do a >600 in 1 day trip safely.

We've thought about leasing a twizy but it's starting to get ridiculous. That would make a total of 4 cars for 2 people (though one of those cars is a road legal motorsport car).

Wow - >600 in one day! How often do you plan on those trips?

Been doing it 3 or 4 times a year for the last few years, it feels like forever but it's not been. We can do it in about 10 hours if we can get proper sleep in the car (obviously when you're being the passenger). You can fall asleep in most cars but the sleep is interrupted, it takes something a bit beyond the normal levels of comfort to allow proper sleep.
