I was billed by my water suppliers for £23.75 a month. I contacted them after hearing i could have a meter fitted, as i live alone and thought it'd be cheaper. They re-estimated the bill to £17.35. I use a sink full of water a day to wash up. I have a 10 minute shower a day. I use a washbasin full every two days to shave, and i flush the toilet about 4 times a day. Yes or no?

Edit... and not forgetting the 4 or 5 mugs of tea or coffee i have everyday, which must be about a full kettle full if that.

Try the site of the company supplying your water, most have either a table or calculator to see if you'd save money by having one fitted.

You can buy your own water meter for about thirty quid. Find a friend to plumb it in to the supply to your flat. It's a really simple job. Take readings of your consumption for a couple of months. Compare the cost of that to being unmetered. It made no sense at all for a frugal family of three hereabouts to get a meter. The utility companies are not honourable people. They tell lies.

In your case Accy, I think I probably would get a meter, given what seems to me quite meagre water use.
I'v thought about it myself and decided not to, two baths every day, work clothes that require regular washing etc etc etc. Then there's summer where I reserve the right to fill a pool for the kids without thinking about how much its going to cost, water the garden etc etc. Selfish ? Maybe, but I'm not going to be a slave to the meter given our usage.

I just found out my bill is around £50 per month :laugh:

There is no reason to pay anything other than quarterly you can pay monthly if you want. Water is the same price however you pay.

Good job you don't live on the coast in the south west Accy ,our bills are horrendous, apparently we have to pay for monitoring the quality of the seawater for the holidaymakers benefit.

If you're good at limiting use a meter is well worth having.
The company will of course screech about legalities of farting within a mile of it, even though their highly trained engineers make a hash of it and leave it leaking, but we wouldn't go back.

My inclination is that being on your own you'll use little water, so a meter may pay. Lance O'Classic's idea is a good one, try and find a calculator.

If you do get a meter there's a grace period where you can go back to normal billing if it doesn't suit you.

Most people pay monthly.
I used to pay 10 months same as council until a meter was fitted.
Now it's more and I have it over 12,with the payment book thing

But do you trust them to not say in the future that now, anyone with a meter fitted must use it?

I pay £15 a month through a meter, switched years ago

Shower daily, bath maybe once a week, washing machine 2-3 times a week, dishwasher 3x weekly, maybe a bowl of washing up water daily, and a kettle or two, loo flush (I often work from home so probably use more than someone out all day)

Wash the car occasionally (be about 8 bucketfuls), and a bucket weekly to mop floors

I reckon your usage would be less
