One of the worst forms of discrimination is the over protection from discrimination.

If I had called him spotty or fat or ginger, this would be no different from calling him gay.... so why all the fuss over nothing.

It is not a fuss about nothing, it is you using a term in a derogatory manner. And trying to defend it is only making it worse, as you are now using the "PC gawn mad" argument.

Next thing you'll be telling us some of your best friends are gay.

Being politcally correct goes too far sometimes....i'm sure no homosexual person would really care that I used the term gay, unless they are deliberately looking for something to say they are discriminated against.

Given I have 16 yo & 18yo daughters who use it all the time, I fully understand in what context you are using it, but it doesn't work here.

There are openly gay people here who would get offended with its use if it were used in conversation. It is only ever used in the derogatory and insults both the target and gay community as it infers that to be gay is to be stupid. That is why it is not used here.

If you want to use the word 'stupid' instead, then do so. It is unlikely that the genuinely stupid people will want to complain if you do as they are too stupid to realise that they are - Geddit

It's interesting that none of the gay CC members have complained. Shouldn't we leave them to make up their own minds about what's offensive to gay people? Then, by all means, we breeders can jump in and support them.

Surely we do not have to declare our sexuality before having the right to raise the issue?

Offensive language can cause offence to those 'outwith'.

it is the context of the usage.

Maybe a little pink icon in the margin next to the 'Executive member' status?

Phew! I have just read this thread. Highlight of the day?
Oh dear
Are we going to have complaints about 'youngsters being bouystres again'?
Im going to start moaning about the tea thread and the old people being boring, repetetive, tedius, eating too many virtual biscuits and cakes and drinking too much tea.

Give me tea!

If a gay person was to be called gay in a derogatory format to their face, then this would be insulting, however I knew Joe was not gay from his countless braggings about his future 16 children and girlfriend on this thread. If Joe has taken offense to being called gay, then let him inform me, if anybody else has taken personal offense to me using the word "gay" then also, inform me via pm. I have no problem with gays and never will, so me calling Jor gay is no worse than me calling him fat.

Nuff said.
