Had the sniffles since monday. stuffy nose and a small sore throat. getting annoyed at public transport but is it a good idea?

Throat is feeling better now but nose is still a little bunged up.

depends on the cold I reckon. If you're the type who has to cycle fast, nope; also if you've got that type of cold that means you can't concentrate on anything (including traffic), nope...

I had a cold last week; still kept with the commuting; but I tend to cycle fairly slowly.

Don't push yourself though; and I'd keep the throat well wrapped up just in case (and the rest of you if it's nippy; I went out wrapped in pretty much an extra layer so the body doesn't have to keep itself warm as well as fight the cold and pedal).

You have to show colds who's boss. Succumb to self-pity and they drag on for ages. Just ignore them and get on with life and they shrug their shoulders and go away.

There is a stage of a cold when you can make yourself worse by exerting yourself but that's early on isn't it when you're battling the bugs?
I think that a ride after that when your body is just clearing up is good for . . . . clearing up.
Just check over both shoulders for other road users.

Quite like the advice in the following times article:

Quote:

“My suggestion would be to apply the “below the neck” rule. If you have fever, sore muscles or joints, vomiting or a very productive cough - symptoms that exhibit themselves from the neck down - then you probably need to avoid exercise for at least a couple of days. If you just have a runny or blocked nose, watery eyes and a light, tickly cough then go ahead.”
Louise Sutton, head of the Carnegie Centre for Sports Performance and Wellbeing at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Seems to make sense. I've played football with a head cold before, but made sure that I am well wrapped up - to the point of sweating quite badly, and well hydrated.

In fact that is something that there does not appear to be any research on, but if I have a cold, I find that I am less affected by it if I keep taking small sips of water.

If you're feeling crappy, then it's probably best not to ride IMO.
