When I was part of the interview panel for a big company we were told how to respond to this

The main point was that we were recruiting someone , hopefully, for a significant number of years
there a situation where they have a longer than usual period after the resign from their current job
or, as here, they will have to have a week or so off or on light duties, shortly after they start

are pretty irrelevant
and agreeing to it easily creates a good impression of their new company when they start which can be worth a lot

other companies had different concepts of how to treat employees - including (to my shock!) a lot of schools!
(note - not ones I worked in but I would certainly include the one my daughter was a pupil in - the Head is currently in jail!!)

Ysgol Friars in Bangor - it was in the news a lot
initially for all the awards and "wonderful" things he did (note the "he did" rather than the school was doing)

I was a teacher down the coast and we heard a lot of stories - some from people who had worked there

his attitude to people who worked there was rather like Trump

do as I say and do what I want (whether or not you know what I want)
and if you don;t then I will do whatever I can to screw you up

I have spoken to teachers who were forced out because they refused to treat certain kids like dirt even if they behaved perfectly well in their lessons

I also spoke to a teacher at a school over the Menai STraits that got a lot of the kids that he kicked out
apparently the vast majority were perfectly OK kids
just got on the wrong side of him

AND - my daughter said that she could see teh treatment of some of the lower ability kids and she could see that there were 2 types of kids there
the ones that he liked - which included all the clever ones
and the ones he did not like

and the treatment of the second group was bordering onto the illegal - and often seemed to cross over into straight out assault

my daughter did well there - but then she was clever

He was a "Big Man" in the main teaching Union - especially locally

and the school governors supported him all the way

he was "good at proper discipline"

one of the stories we heard was of a kid who was misbehaving
in our school he would have been sat down for a "chat" with the Head and his parents and an action plan put in place
and maybe excluded for a few days to calm down

in that school he was shouted at
which is a damn good way of winding up teenage boys (and girls!)
and literally frogmarched out of the school ,through the car park and THROWN out onto the street
where he landed in a heap and had scratches and bruises

that is what we heard

the union supported him with top lawyers and the threatened lawsuit from the kids parents never happened and the kid went to the other English Language school across the Menai Straits



I probably shouldn;t add that - after we split up - my ex became a governor at the school
so I won;t!!!

sorry - but all that winds me up
if I ever come across him after he gets out of prison - I hope my wife is around to talk me out of doing something to him
he is probably the only person in the World that I am not sure I could me near and not do something violent

an update...
I did tell them about my upcoming operation at the interview. It seemed appropriate since they asked what my notice period was with my current employer, which is two weeks... but having already been signed off sick for three weeks I told them that I'd been signed off sick for three weeks.

Had the op yesterday.

Got a call with the job offer today!

I now have a date for both the hernia op and the job interview.
Interview on the Friday, op on the following Monday.
If i do get an offer it'll be a few weeks before the start date when i should be back on my feet so shouldn't be an issue.

I had an inguinal hernia op in March and seven days later started my six-week road trip holiday to Greece and back, so starting a new job a few weeks in should be fine😁
Having said that, I'm going in for another one on Friday, so I may have attracted the attention of the minor deities/ Murphy, and recovery from this one will be a pain! Good luck with yours 🤞

It depends where the hernia is. If it is an umbilical hernia I wouldn’t expect a fast recovery - until you have had surgery on your abdomen you don’t realise just how much you rely on it.

no-one has mentioned recovery times
I was assuming I wouldn;t be running a marathon an hour after

but sounds like I should check things out a bit!
