I recently bought my first road bike (Trek 1.2 2009) and so far have managed about 200 yards on it thanks to the snow, ice, dark nights and work!!! I'm hoping to get out more in the next few weeks but came across an odd competition in my gym today.

They are giving away a bike (it didn't say what) as a prize to the person who rides the most kilometers in February on the gym bikes. Basically, you write down the distance you have done on a card and get it signed each time by a member of staff. So off I go today and get to 22k before I pack in, however, there are no staff about so I write the distance on the card and after a shower go to reception and ask how its supposed to work. The lady on reception tells me she will just sign it! Obviously I then query how they can prove what people have done to which she replies she thought that but is just doing as she is told!

So my question is, do I carry on in the gym toiling away only to be beaten by a little chav who makes up what he's done or do I give it up now and just get out on my own bike? I suspect honesty, in this case, will not be the best policy!

It's pretty likely that you wouldn't want the bike anyway. Having said that with the weather as it is, stay in the gym and cheat like buggery!

I did an orienteering event some moons ago and they had printed on the entry form:-

"This event is to test your skill with a map and compass. If you cheat and use a GPS, you will probably get away with it. We won't know - but you will".

The bike will be pants anyway.

If you can get out on the bike then make that the objective, if the weather etc. is still bad use the excercise bike and put down what you've actually achieved. You can't fool yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't cheat, the guilt will eat you up and the bike will be not only a piece of crap but forever sullied by your dishonesty too. Satisfy yourself with the notion that the cheating bastard who wins it will die of cancer in a head on collision with a bus.
