The same thing was happening at my sister's house and I eventually discovered that it was due to her wireless router and cordless phone sharing the same channel! I got into the router setup and changed the channel and the problem went away and has never returned.

Wireless networks seem to have 2 main faults; network adapters or channels being used. If the adapter is working fine, then it's likely to be the channel being used.

Look underneath (or on the back) and see if there is a model name and version number, but don't accidentally tell us your WPA key!

I get similar problems when using WPA2 encryption on my dell laptop. So obviously went back to WPA.

Although I agree with ColinJ - these crap outs are often caused by the router rather than the driver, I'd first try going to device manager and deleting the wifi device, rebooting and letting windows reinstall the driver just in case it has got 'interfered with' somehow.

Well, I did the whole kit 'n kaboodle...downloaded the drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled, and....it seems to have made naff all difference. Still dropping out, still 'network adaptor problem', troubleshooter still fixes it....ho hum.

So interference from cordless phones is still a possibility?

Try moving the phones close to the router and see if the problem gets worse. Try unplugging them all and see if the problem goes way. If either/both of those is true, then you'd need to try and change the router Wifi channel. We'd need to look up how to do that so we need to know exactly what model router it is. 'A BT one' isn't enough. Look on the back or underside of the router and there should be a sticker or plate with a manufacturer name and model number e.g. Netgear DGND3700, TP-Link Wireless-N150 etc. Once we know that, it shouldn't be hard to find the documentation online.

Looks like one of the standard BT Home Hub 2.0, the interface is just BTs standard, cant remember which companys make them anyway. You should be able to access it at 192.168.1.254 in a web browser, from memory you go just go to settings>wifi or settings>advanced>wifi, default admin password should be "admin" or might be on the sticker on the bottom of the homehub if its a newer one. Then you can try changing the wifi channel and encryption settings, if you feel confident enough to.

It wouldnt be the first time a homehub has been dodgy though because theyre cheap, you can buy them for a fiver on ebay and they make quite good switches/wifi access points

The most uptodate drivers would be from ralink here and look for rt309x, the driver is dated April
of this year though that may only relate to some of the other chipsets listed. How far away from the router are you when it's crapping out ? Can't comment on the bt home hubs but the virgin ones had poor range performance at one point.
