so if i hit a ped on a green it would be MY fault? in a car or on a bike?

If it was reasonably foreseeable that the pedestrian may step out (i.e. they were visible ahead of time and you didn't slow down on the approach to the crossing), then yes. If they leapt out from behind a hedge where there was no crossing, then probably not.

Why is that preposterous? On a trunk road, maybe, but in a town or village it seems to be the right way around. Green means go if it's clear
Whenever I had told people the same thing they generally think I am crazy and just making it up.
May be "trackstanding?" at a ped crossing is akin to a boy racer reving his engine impatiently. - get out of my way i'm in a hurry!
It seems to be quite common at the moment, or, at least i'm seeing alot of it anyway. People trackstanding at lights. Wobbling and farting about in front of sh1t loads of traffic.
Unclip, foot down. Less drama and no stress.

This is not a trackstand, merely an atempt at doing one. And yes they are annoying, bunch of wannabe feeloaders.

Oh come on. How hard is it really to miss a pedestrian?? They're large and slow moving. Just plot a line in your head where you will miss them (aim behind them as this is one case where leading a moving target is bad). Shoot for it and be on your way.

Yes. But you didn't hit them, so it's a non-issue.

My heart always sinks a little when I'm approaching a pedestrian crossing, the lights are red and I'm slowing down to stop at the line, but the people using the crossing look daggers at me as if I'm about to deliberately run them down. Unfortunately, they're conditioned to think like that by the idiots who do go through red lights. I've never had a ped actually say anything to me, though, so no opportunity to answer back. Anyway, what can you do? You just have to get on with your life, carry on enjoying your ride.

Problem comes when they actually notice you and do the rabbit in the headlights thing... I find the best tactic in this situation is to wave your arm frantically in the direction you want them to move. Shouting at them also works but isn't likely to improve their opinion of cyclists much.

I find it ridiculous to suggest that a cyclist trying to get to work as fast as he or she can will still abiding by the laws should be regarded as unsafe. Half the reason i ride a road bike to work is to see if I can beat yesterdays time in. I do get that trackstanding at a ped crossing is like reving the engine aggressively.

Go as fast as you can while being aware of your situation, and don't trackstand at ped crossings.

Hah, you say that, I had one young lad with ipod on, crossing on red, I aimed behind him, he panicked and jumped backwards, I switched to aiming in front, he reversed and jumped forward. True comedy moment, no harm done and ended up with us both stationary in middle of road, waiting for the other one to move first.
