Only got a rather old and poor pic of our (Gromit & myself's) 'new' tank - gravel substrate has now been replaced with sand and there are more plants :-)

We've found them super helpful with any queries and Fishlady there is a phenomenal expert. I'd suggest reading through the 'recommended topics' (if you haven't done a lot of research already) to get an idea of how to prevent any possible problems, also these articles:

We started out not very informed at all, but swiftly came to realise there's a fair bit to it if you're to keep the fish healthy and happy. Ours were so much happier when we moved them to the tank above (240 litre) with its massive filter system, as opposed to the 60 litres they were in before.

Had a tank as a kid and also got one for our kids (which I ended up looking after of course).
Started with all sorts of fish but all died except one Guppy. Guppy had babies (they are livebearing fish) and soon had a tank full of Guppies that then seemed to maintain their own population and breed for 10 years before my kids grew up and gave it all to kid up the road.
Guppies are great.

Hiya akb, did you cycle your tank before putting the fish in? It takes about 6 weeks to cycle using household ammonia. Do you have a water testing kit?
We went for tropical fish as we found gold fish took a lot more care and you need a really big tank for goldies as they can grow up to 1 foot in length and decent filter as they produce a lot of waste. Common Goldfish:
40 gallons (48 US gallons, 180 litres) for the first fish with an extra 12 gallons (14 US gallons, 55 litres) for each extra fish. The tank needs to have a minimum length of 4 feet (120cm) to allow swimming room. Single tail goldfish are more suited to a pond when they are near full size to give them swimming room.
Depending on the size of your tank you may be overstocked which can harm the fish.

Hi debs, we purchased the kit from a local koi company and they mentioned the prep required to settle the tank. They did however also give us some additive I guess to neutralise the water. We'll see how it goes.

Archie, I saw thread title and immediately thought of my tank. The thread title just invited it. Is it wrong to have a tank roaming the garden as a middle aged adult? Never had a toy as good when I was a kid, and I loved Land of the Giants. II have a mate is wanting to come round now he's found out I've got it.
