I see in the Sun newspaper today, that the "Go Compare" advert has now been voted the most irratating TV advert for the second year running, the only good news is, I've not heard it now for almost a fortnight, thankfully.

Given that the motor insurance industry has an almost certain income (given the legal requirement to have vehicle insurance) then in the current economic climate, they are the only ones with loads of spare cash to flash and buy 'cheap' advertising. Cheap because no-one else is buying it because their takings are down - viz a viz - they can't afford to advertise?

The supermarkets seem to be advertising as much as ever.

Petrol companies don't seem to be advertising much at the moment, which I find strange - yes, people need the product, but at a time when pump prices are soaring, isn't there a need for a bit of good pr/advertising? Or are they keeping their heads down?

OTOH, I see (not hear - sound turned off) that the gold-buying ads have diminished recently. And a lot of the personal loans companies' ads vanished when the proverbial hit the fan in the financial world a while back. So it's not all bad!

I hate advertising. All of it, without exception. I object strongly to being patronised and treated like an idiot in my own house. Fortunately, I never watch telly (except during the F1 season, and then only BBC1) so I can truthfully say I've never seen the GoCompare advert. Or the Sheila's Wheels advert ... or anything with meerkats in it ... or the confused.com ad ... or the Halifax ones ...

There is also that one with the screamy, shouty, skinny, wrinkly bloke who looks like a corpes and had an annoying puppet of himself who is equally screamy and shouty.

These companies would hang up the phone to you if you phoned them and was screamy and shouty down the phone at them.

I have always insisted that advertising on tv has little or no effect on me, but the ad for Danepak where the guy grills the bacon and slices the bread makes me want bacon every time I see it. Also the fact that it is so simple makes it hugely effective.
