I'd be surprised if anyone thinks it acceptable. Equally I'd be surprised if no one did it. Lots of things are unacceptable, but that doesn't preclude them happening. We all do unacceptable things from time to time; it's the severity of those things that is perhaps most important rather than their frequency. To my mind pulling a sickie is at the lower end of the scale of importance, particularly if one believes one has been treated unfairly at work or has been sleighted.

Is pulling a sickie worse than the finance director heading off for an impromptu team building day on the golf course with his favoured brown-noser? Or watching the heirarchy dividing up the bonus spoils whilst the rest of the staff are told "jam tomorrow"?

No, sickies are not acceptable, but sometimes they may be justified.

Is it ever acceptable to throw a sickie without being sick.

Yes... especially if you're treated like crap and don't get paid anyway. Can't say I do it but it's a regular occurrence here.

I am a union rep , I had my first bit of sickness in thirteen years just before xmas because my kidney stone was playing up and my doctor advised it. I will also need time off when I get it blasted. I believe if you are sick , you are sick and you take time off, if not take holiday or talk to the boss to arrange something , if need be. I often have to represent someone were I privately think they're taking the michael.

The reason I asked this question was because on another post people were suggesting it, one guy even said it was not yet an option as paid sick leave was not due yet.

I had an answer from some I was trying to get a balance. As usual you posted without answering the question, are you after a record post count or just have nothing else to do.

My sickness record has been fantastic for the last 25 years since starting work, until this year. So far 28 days off this year with my shoulder (25 for op and 3 days at various intervals due to pain/lack of sleep). Fortunately I've already spoken to occupational health.

I know a guy who sees his holiday allocation and sick days per year as a whole. Ie add them together to get the total allowed amount of paid time off he can take in 1 year. Completely wrong.. and ironically his name is Michael!

I heard someone say the Americans see their sick 'allowance' as part of their leave due to the small amount of official Holiday entitlement don't know if thats true or not.

I threw a sickie once. Reason will not be divulged but divorce was on the cards. Although wrong, in the grander scheme of things it was necessary. In that case it was easier to do this than try and explain what was going to the employer. Other than that I have a very good sickness record.
