Sid Mottram find

Hi all
Can anyone give me any information on this bike I've dug out of my garage? It was my dads bike but its not something I want to keep.

If that was my dad's old bike I would be holding on to it just for sentimental reasons and if possible I would get it road worthy and ride it.

Doesn't look like it would need much work to be eating up the miles again in all fairness.

Sid Mottram and Fred Atterbury are both old Leicester bike names for sure .

Ive got other things of my dads that mean more to me.
Bikes are not my forte so would be ideal if was bought by someone who can do bike justice

My understanding was Atterbury had his own shop at the same time as Mottram had his .

Shepshed, Leicestershire

Not far away then I could be interested
There will be a date code on the chainset which might give you a rough idea of age , depending upon it being original or not .
Certainly looks like the rear mechanism is non original as is the gear shifter and flat bars poss all done at same time ?

Nice. As Biggs suggests, the rear mech and likely shift levers are likely a later addition and really a bit low-rent. Be interesting if you are able to date it.

As I understand it Mottram didn't build his own frames, but bought in from other builders. A 4 digits number suggests it was made my Mercian in Derby, who started supplying Mottram in the mid 50's, so my loose guess is second half of the fifties.

The Atterbury link is harder to divine, but was fairly local to Mottram and may have been a case of one supplying bikes or frames to the other, who then added their own flourish before kicking it out to a punter. Half the fun will be trying to decipher that story.
