First black man to receive the Oscar, was he not? Certainly the first in front of the camera, anyway.

Always remember his performance in 'In the heat of the night' with Rod Steiger. Stunning film.
Also 'Guess who's coming to dinner'.

We managed to see "In the Heat of the Night" at our local arts cinema recently and it totallu stands up today, whilst some of the more preachy if worthy films like "coming to dinner" are perhaps historical curiosities now. ""heat of the night" is a very well crafted film as well as the superb performances from both leads. Poitier's quiet dignity plays off well against Steiger's more showy performance as the redneck, albeit wise and intelligent, sheriff. Both are outsiders in their way.

I remember a scene from ’Heat of the Night’ when Rod Steiger and Sydney Poitier are driving very quickly through the town.
They drive past a very slow-walking old black man with a stick. A few minutes later, in another part of town, they drove past the same old man, still walking very slowly along the path. 👨🏽‍🦯 😄😀

There are a few other gaffs in the film. It’s supposed to be the height of summer yet when Harvey Oberst is chased through a forest the leaves are yellow. It would have been impossible for Tibbs to take a Gulf, Mobile & Ohio train as services were suspended in the early fifties in Mississippi.
