Signing out of google in Chrome

I like the Chrome (I'm on a mac), but I'm feeling a little more spied on. Used to be I'd log into google, and later log out but find when I went to log back in, google still remembered my username. So even though I thought I was logged out, google is probably still recording everything I do against that identity. So I took to deleting all the google cookies when I logged out, so that google would "forget" me.

Now I find they've changed something, and google is storing your google identity somewhere else in chrome - so even if I remove every single cookie, when I go to the google sign in page, it's already filled out the username I had most recently logged in as. Anyone know how if there is a way to log out completely from google if using Chrome?

That's logging in on google.com, I'm not logging in to the browser itself.

It's the latest version of Chrome on OSX, 49.0.2623.87

Looks like I might have to start using safari, as Firefox isn't an option (I have to keep an older version of that to use an extension I need)

i think since Chrome is Google's browser, it's always harvesting your browsing data regardless of whether you're logged in or not... getting its hands on such detailed data is probably why Google created its own browser in the first place.

That is probably saved in the Passwords section.

Settings/Advanced Settings/Passwords and Forms/Manage Passwords.

Delete as required and then untick the box.

It is also probably saved as an auto-fill field in your browser settings.

If you want Chrome without google try Chromium. It's the Open-Source browser which Google Chrome is built from.

How is this for scary., I bought a new tablet and after logging it into google the tablet then took on the same splash screen as my mobile phone, which was a picture I had of one of the hounds. Mobile and tablet are different manufacturers and I didn't log my mobile number into my tablet.

Totally normal. You signed into both devices using your google account.

Could you use Incognito? I have to occasionally for work when I log onto other machines than normal though I'm sure it still remembers some things!

Thanks for the help.

Yes, I know. Google knows so much about me, it would be nice if it didn't know every single web search I did. Of course, https://duckduckgo.com is alternative approach.

Thanks, I did double check after you posted this, but I long stopped storing passwords in the browser.

.

Yeah, I don't have autofill turned on, and that's not the symptom. To be clear, when I hit the "sign in" button on the google page I see this (I've blotted out my name and email address)

Until a few days ago, clearing the cookies would get me the second one.

Google's probably been secretly storing the last login name all the time, but now they are making it obvious.

Thanks, I'll see how I get on with Safari. Chromium looks interesting.
Could you just not use 'Private Browsing' on the machine you want to be hidden on?

Thanks, but it's not that sort of situation, it's just that google knows soooo much about me - I'm an android user - that I would just like a tiny part of my online life to be beyond their reach.
If I installed Chromium alongside Chrome would the two talk to each other thus supplying Google with info?

Unlikely. That's the bonus of open source; if it did share data, you could see it in the code.

Though I guess Chrome could surreptitiously examine Chromium's cache, history and bookmarks. That would make it spyware, so they are unlikely to do that.

I like browser features like history and bookmarks. And I'm not visiting sites I'm ashamed of.
