Saw a sign today on my commute that tells motorists to give 1.5m or 5ft of room.

Wondering, has anybody else seen signs like this around?

You won't see many. The space that motorists should leave cyclists is dependent on a variety of things. So 1.5m won't be enough in some circumstances.

I'd be happy with 1.5m space, even when the car is traveling at 60mph.

For some strange reason, I can always tell if a car is too close or not.

If they are within 2 handlebar lengths, then they are too close to me. On faster roads, I expect more room, and usually get it (with the acceptance of single track lanes (but then I am normally courteous and allow them to pass me close)).

We have "Please give cyclists room" signs dotted here and there.

I've always assumed them to be ironic, or something, given that you have to take the lane or be squeezed past traffic islands where they're situated.

Those close signs can indeed be dangerous.

On the intended subject I only noticed yesterday that they had painted cycle lanes on some of the Leam Lane Roman road.
This leaves a single lane down the centre for the cars so they have to straddle the cycle lane.

I guess its real intention is as a form of driver training.

There are signs in, I think, Penicuik telling drivers not to overtake cyclists at the traffic islands.

A cyclist should ride assertively in primary where necessary to prevent dangerous overtakes and a driver should give plenty of room when overtaking a cyclist. In a perfect world. But it isn't a perfect world. Drip feed reminders to motorists about giving cyclists room can only be a good thing, surely?

I make just this point in a video on some new bike farcilities near me. Watch from about 1:10. I make the point at about 2:20. I've sent links to this video to Solihull Council asking for their comments. Not heard anything, of course...
