There's no such thing as a bad bike, so whatever you buy it will be enjoyable. What sort of cycling did you do when you were young? Once you get the bug again, you might be tempted to re-live what you used to do, so the type of bike that you had then, but updated might be a good choice.

And this will be (N+1)-1, so you can get the N+1 next year.

Hi and welcome silverdave the above comments on a hybridbike that would also be a +1 on that from me,as you are saying riding towpaths your need for full suspension is IMO not needed ok with front sus but i found that rear suspension really did sap some of my power ! Ialso ride an MTB solid frame on which I also tow a trailer for shopping etc. i also find the sit up and beg riding position better for me, the advice on visiting your local bike shops is also a thing to do and remember to shop about for the best deal ! ok you mau not get cash knocked off but you may just end up with some goodies.
