Yes I came up with 1 as the answer using Bodmas, apparently they teach this nowadays,

P ( )
E exponent
M or D. Multiple or Divide (left to right with which ever comes first)
A or S Add or Subtract ( left to right with which ever comes first)

It comes up with the same answer.

1 (BODMAS) but putting the brackets in is safer, especially when things get complicated.

I remember having to work on other people's C software which relied very heavily on operator precedence and it was a nightmare trying to work what they THOUGHT it did, and what it ACTUALLY did!

It's a bit more complicated than that...

No other answer is possible when you apply conventional meaning to the signs on display.

If you choose to apply unconventional meanings then it can mean whatever you like. But I take no responsibility for the consequences.

By "conventional" what do you mean ?

The convention is to do brackets, powers, multiply & divide then and only the adding and subtract. Anything else is not the convention and is wrong

Yes, you're quite right. I'd confused myself earlier

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
If i stand on one leg, and touch my nose with the first finger of my left hand, i still have no bloody idea what the answer is. Mind you if something adds up to more than 10 i'm completely lost unless i use my toes to count as well.

3 divided by 1/3 = 1
9 - 1 = 8
8 + 1 = 9

You do the division before any addition or subtraction.

No.

3 divided by a third is the same as 3 X 3.

It's 3 X 1/3 that's 1.

You are asked to divide 6 by 1/3, but 1/3 of what? Surely we need to know what we are dividing 6 by, and the 1/3 doesn't give us that.[/QUOTE]
