You might consider leaving the rear mech attached but adjust it down the cassette/ block by screwing in the limit screw and/or threading a short length of gear inner wire through the rear mech's barrel adjuster and securing it by the pinch bolt. You can then use the barrel adjuster to fine tune.

It's how we convert our fleet bikes to SS since the general public cannot be trusted to change gear properly.

Mickle! Sorry for picking you up wrong. I've actually shortened the chain like you said, left the cog cluster on and am just running the chain on the middle chainring lined up with the fourth sprocket, seems to work fine, so thanks. I'll run it for a while and see how it goes. I'm new to bikes and just being able to shorten the chain, which must be trivia to the enthusiast, was strangely satisfying. So cheers to all!
