It's a hot day and you're an hour from home and you're thirsty. Half a water bottle left. Psychologically it seems better to sip it (thereby not running out completely). But from a physiological point of view, which is better?

1) Sip little and often and eke it out over the last hour

2) Slurp the whole lot in one go

I don't know the biology of this but I get the feeling that it would be better to slurp the lot and get reasonably hydrated for a while rather than sip it slowly and remain a bit dehydrated for the full hour. Assume that by slurping it doesn't make you want to have a pee stop

I'd say 1.

2. would make me want to pee.

And generally there are enough shops around to be able to stop and get a drink.

If you were well hydrated up until that point, in the UK, chances of becoming dehydrated to the point of concern within an hour is very low (unless it is VERY hot and you are riding hard), so do as you wish, it won't make any difference.

Sip or slurp when running short of water? What a stupid question.

Hot days in Glossop??? I grew up in Stalybridge and don't remember too many of them! Would sip btw as it'd make me feel more comfortable knowing that I had some left...

They say that you absorb water better if you sip it over a longer period. Necking it encourages it to go "straight through" apparently.

Of course, who exactly "they" are, is another discussion entirely...

Anything above 10 degrees C counts as a hot day in Glossop
I sometimes do the Holme Moss-Strines-Snake loop which is about 52 miles and takes me about 4 hours. There is no shop after about half way and I will easily get through 2 bottles in 2 hours on a warm day. So I usually find myself with half a bottle left and still quite a way to go. There are a few pubs but being a tight northerner I object to their prices for soft drinks

Those mountain streams look mighty inviting but mum always told me to avoid them as there may be a dead sheep upstream ^_^

Based on what "they" say seems I should sip rather than slurp

I nearly ran of of juice one day, I knocked of a house and asked the lady if I could have some water, of course you can, and before I knew it I had a cup of tea and biscuits handed to me and we sat out in the garden, I think she was very lonely and wanted some one to talk too.
Should've asked her if she had any lube
